The Medieval Murderers

The Medieval Murderers: Biographical Sketch

The Medieval Murderers initially formed as a group of four historical novelists – Michael Jecks, Bernard Knight, Ian Morson, and Susanna Gregory (pseudonym of Elizabeth Cruwys, also writing under the name Simon Beaufort) – giving book talks at literary events such as festivals and book store events throughout Great Britain.  In 2003, they decided to collaborate on what would become the first of a series of books, each one of which follows the history of one particular item throughout the centuries, from the Middle Ages to modern times. Realizing that an anthology simply collecting short stories from each of the group’s writers in all likelihood wouldn’t sell well enough to gain a publisher’s interest in their project in the first place, they settled on the format of a novel composed of several interlocking novellas (each written by one of the group’s members), which at the same time also allowed them greater flexibility in spreading their authorial wings.  A fifth writer, Philip Gooden, joined in time for participation in their first novel, and several years into the project, the group was further extended to also include C.J. Sansom and Karen Maitland.
