Halloween Bingo 2021: Card, Spells, Markers and Book Pool – Lioness at Large

Halloween Bingo 2021: Card, Spells, Markers and Book Pool

Phew!  I’ve had blog display issues for the better part of August due to a stupid WP plugin acting up (and of course, it was a plugin allegedly intended to “facilitate” the import of content into my chosen theme — haha, right), but luckily they were resolved just in time for Halloween Bingo!

(Gosh … is it that time of year already?!)

The game is promising to be particularly exciting this year, because we have a set of new squares, many of them participant-inspired, and almost all of them happily found their way onto my card.  For the one square that I’d been hoping to get but didn’t (“Dem Bones”), I swiftly used one of my spell cards — which have also been extended by two additions (also participant-inspired), and they, too, both absolute winners!  AND as if all of that weren’t fabulous enough, our host has extended the “pre-reading” period all the way back to last weekend; so as I write this, we’ve all been merrily reading away for three (almost four) days already, doing our best to get as far as possible with the two books we’re allowed to finish before the official start of the game (September 1), and maybe even getting a head start on another book or two — which we also may do, as long as we leave 50%+ of the book to be read after HB has officially begun.  So tell me all of that isn’t exciting?!

(I’ve used the pre-read phase to finish Karen Menuhin’s The Black Cat Murders — for the Black Cat square of course — and to get a head start with Brian Flynn’s The Five Red Fingers — for Lethal Games — and Mary Kelly’s The Spoilt Kill, for Vintage Mystery.)

And now, without any further ado:

My 2021 Card

My Game Progress Post

I’ll be tracking my overall progress over the two-month game period HERE

As in previous years, my master update post will include updated versions of my card, marking squares called and read (for), as well as updated screenshots of my Excel tracking sheet, a list of the bingo calls in the order of their respective dates, and a list of the books I’ve actually read for each individual square.  As I complete my book selections, those will also be marked accordingly in this present post (though no other updates will be made here).

READ BY CANDLE LIGHT OR FLASHLIGHT and FREE (RAVEN) SQUARE

Any of my above options for the topical squares … i.e., an embarrassment of riches.

And yet, I ended up reading something completely different for both squares after all:

Raven (Center Square): Martin Edwards (ed.), Various Authors: Murder by the Book √
Read by Candle Light or Flashlight: Edgar Allan Poe: The Raven & Annabel Lee / Elizabeth Bowen: The Demon Lover √

And now: Let the game (officially) begin!

25 thoughts on “Halloween Bingo 2021: Card, Spells, Markers and Book Pool

    1. Thank you, that is high praise indeed! I loved your posts on the individual squares — to the point of actually contemplating stealing the idea, but WP’s malfunctioning technology ended up stopping my grabby fingers by flatly preventing me from posting *anything*- Oh well …

        1. I‘m looking forward to them! Mine are usually a weekend thing … as long as work doesn‘t interfere, as it has a nasty habit of doing around this time of the year and already promises to do this time around as well.

Not to mention that I‘ll also have to somehow find the time for my July @ August / „Summer Games“ reading review, which was delayed by my blog being down for most of August … (grrr).

  1. So glad Bingo is starting!😀 There’s no better reminder that Halloween is on its way🕯🎃🍂 The spell cards are fantastic. And it sounds like you have great reading choices for each square📚 How do you keep track of all those titles? You must have a thorough process for making your reading lists.

    1. At this point it’s essentially a reading list that’s being carried forward from year to year, BUT with the yearly addition of the “HB-ready” books newly added to my TBR. (Along the lines of “if I don’t get around to it this time, I probably will next time or the time after that …”) 🙂

And yes, I’m really looking forward to most of the books I’ve lined up for this year.

    1. We‘ve always had spell cards, at least since 2018 — only fewer, and so far I‘ve mostly tried to get along without them. But this year‘s set is just too gorgeous to ignore!

The markers say thank you! 😀

  2. The boys are looking dapper! With or without the socks. 😉 You’ve got a gorgeous card this year with all those new squares.

    1. The boys are preening in the praise! 😀

I love this year‘s card, but I equally love seeing all those new squares showing up on *all* the cards — they‘re making for so much more variety; more than we‘ve ever had it seems to me (and we‘ve always had plenty anyway)!

      1. I like that a few of them are consolidations of other squares from past games. I agree with MR, that a few of the squares were so closely related, it made sense to combine them. And all the new ones are so … pretty seems the wrong word, but I love looking at them.

        1. MR kicked off a discussion back in July on which squares to keep and invited ideas for new ones — the consolidation thing was pretty much a consensus feeling (I may have been the first to actually voice it, but MR immediately said she‘d been thinking about it, too, and others agreed). I‘m particularly glad that we‘ve whittled down the two splatter-related squares to one named … just that, even if that means I‘m having to contend with it on my card for my pains, lol. (And by my self-imposed rules for this year‘s game, as a new square it‘s immune to the spell cards, even though I‘m determined to use every last one of those, too). Ditto noir. I also like the extended / amended definitions of some of the squares (Halloween, King of Fear, etc.), which have opened up whole new categories of books as matches for them. And yeah, MR has absolutely outdone herself with the square design. This year‘s game really is HB bigger and better than ever before in every respect!

          1. I’ll just add that, even though I have no plans to read any *this* year, I’m thrilled that non-fiction is now acceptable for many squares instead of just one.

          2. Absolutely, yes (and I actually meant to mention that, too). I’ve had NF books in my reading lists for individual squares in the past — eventually always ended up picking a fiction title, but I *was* close to asking whether NF was permitted in a couple of cases, so it’s extremely cool to know we can now do so as a matter of course.

    1. Finding enough books isn’t the issue once you’re in the swing of the game, trust me! 😀 We’ve been playing this elsewhere since 2016, and it’s proving more and more addictive with every new year. All who have been participating regularly over the past couple of years agree that the two-month period when we’re running the game is the best part of the year! 🙂

    1. It‘s very simple, really — and tons of fun. We‘ve been playing it on Booklikes since 2016 … when BL folded we grudgingly had to move to another venue (that we‘re none too happy with, but which is the only option at the moment), but we‘re hanging on like grim death rather than let circumstances defeat us! 😀

  3. I love this time of year and Halloween Bingo is just another thing I miss about BookLikes, the flood of posts about all the books hitting these boards. Your lists of books look great and I’m so excited to see/read these posts.

    1. HB was definitely one of the best things about BookLikes. 🙁 Unfortunately with the most recent changes on GR, that is no longer even a feasible stopgap, so we’re probably going to have to move yet again … :(:( GRrrrr indeed!

Adventures in Arda

Note: This was my summer 2022 project — but while I posted the associated project pages here at the time (Middle-earth and its sub-project pages concerning the people and peoples, timeline, geography, etc. of Arda and Middle-earth, see enumeration under the Boromir meme, below), I never got around to also copying this introductory post from […]

Michael J. Sullivan: Riyria

The Riyria Revelations are the fantasy series that brought Michael J. Sullivan instant recognition back in the late 2000s.  Originally published as a series of six installments, they are now available as a set of three books, with each of the three books comprising two volumes of the original format.  As he did with almost […]

Michael J. Sullivan: Legends of the First Empire

Michael J. Sullivan’s Riyria books have been on my TBR for a while, but until I’d read two short stories from the cycle — The Jester and Professional Integrity — I hadn’t been sure whether his writing would be for me.  Then I found out that (much like Tolkien’s Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and The History […]
